How to choose suitable welding material?

As we all know, not all plastic materials can be welded by the ultrasonic plastic welding machine. For example, if the melting point gap of two kinds of plastic materials is too big, ultrasonic welding process is difficult and the welding effect is not so good, therefore, it is necessary to know about the ultrasonic welding materials

Commonly used plastic material characteristics

Here are some common used plastic material and their characteristics

ABS: Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene copolymer, also named as ABS, the gravityt is light, and Abs has good thermal conductivity, it is especially suitable for ultrasonic plastic welding.

PS: polystyrene, the gravity is light, it has strong corrosion resistance against water and chemical, with high stability and good insulation, PS is especially suitable for injection and extrusion forming. It is often used in toys, decorations, dishwashing equipment, lens, floating wheel and other products’ manufacturing. Because of high elastic strength coefficient, it is suitable for ultrasonic welding process.

Acrylic, Acrylic products has high hardness and impact resistance, it will not be affected by acid, and the optical clarity is high, so it is often used in car taillights, meaning board, MEDALS, faucet handles, etc.

Aceta: It has high tensile resistance and High compressive strength and good wear resistance, it is commonly used for training, screws, bearings, rollers, kitchen utensils, etc., Due to low grinding coefficient, ultrasonic welding process need high vibration amplitude and longer welding time.

Celluloeics: when the ultrasonic welding machine working, due to the ultrasonic vibration, the material color  is easy to change, and the contact surface is not easy to absorb energy, so the ultrasonic welding process is difficult.

PP: polypropylene also named as PP, the specific gravity is light, and it has good insulation, high strength, heat resistance and chemical erosion, after the wire can be made into rope and other fabrics. PP Products are toys, luggage, music shell, electrical insulation, food packaging and so on. Due to its low elastic coefficient, the material is easy to attenuate acoustic vibration and is difficult to weld.

Good welding effect material:

ABS: Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene copolymer, referred to as ABS; This material is a welding material, but the cost of this material is relatively expensive. ABS has the advantages of high impact resistance, high heat resistance, flame retardant, enhancement and transparency; it is widely used in machinery, automobile, electronic appliances, instrumentation, textile and construction and other industrial fields, is a very wide range of thermoplastic engineering plastics.

PS:  the gravity is light, it has strong corrosion resistance against water and chemical, with high stability and good insulation, therefore it is suitable for ultrasonic welding.

SNA: Ultrasonic welding effect is good.

Difficult weld material

PPS: It is very hard to weld because the material is too soft.

PE: Polyethylene, referred to as PE; This material is soft so that it is difficult to weld

PVC: Polyvinyl chloride, referred to as PVC; The material is soft and it is hard to weld, so few people use this kind of material, the product of this material generally uses high frequency to weld.

PC: Polycarbonate, the melting point is high,  so it need more time to weld it.

PP: Polypropylene, The material is difficult to weld due to its low elastic coefficient and easy attenuation of acoustic vibration.

Other materials like PA, POM(Polyoxymethylene).PMM(Polymethyl methacrylate),A/S(Acrylonitrile-styrene copolymer), PETP( polybutylene terephthalate) and

PBTP (polyethylene terephthalate) are difficult to use ultrasonic welder for welding.
