In the daily ultrasonic processing and welding process, there are often plastic processing manufacturers question: is ultrasonic welding plastic really waterproof? However, it depends on the selection of plastic materials, the design of ultrasonic welding wire, the design of plastic parts, and welding process parameters and many other factors, to ensure the reliability of waterproof plastic parts. Ultrasonic welding needs to meet the waterproof requirements, so the quality and strength of ultrasonic welding put forward higher requirements. For amorphous plastics such as PPO, ABS, PC, PC/ABS, PMMA, etc., because it is easy to weld, but also easier to achieve waterproof requirements. However, semi-crystalline plastics, such as PA66 and PBT, coupled with the influence of glass fiber (high content of glass fiber will affect the welding performance), are difficult to weld, and it is very challenging to achieve waterproof requirements. 

Design considerations for plastic products requiring welding

1. Size of welding wire: the larger the size of ultrasonic welding wire, the better the waterproof performance after welding.
2. Ultrasonic wire corner rounded design: rounded design to avoid the accumulation of ultrasonic solubilization, affecting the quality of welding.
3. Groove and shear design of welding surface
4. Accurate positioning between welding plastic parts: it is recommended to use positioning column or positioning hole and other ways for self-positioning; If this way is complicated, it must be positioned by welding fixture.
5. Increase the surface roughness of welding surface: can improve the quality of ultrasonic welding
6. Use short-range welding.

Notes on welding process parameters;

In order to improve the quality and strength of ultrasonic welding and ensure the waterproofing of welding, the first principle of setting welding process parameters is to carry out in the direction of high welding energy, such as: the use of high-power ultrasonic welding machine, ensure enough amplitude and frequency, increase welding time, increase welding pressure......
1. Avoid falling too fast: it is easy to squash the ultrasonic line, so that the ultrasonic line can not play the role of melting, forming false phase fusion.
2. Ultrasonic Welding time is too long: the plastic parts receive too long heat energy, which not only makes the plastic material melt, but also causes the coking phenomenon of plastic tissue, resulting in sand holes, from which water or gas permeates, and this defect is difficult to be detected and found between the welding plastic parts.
